Pottan Theyyam

Pottan theyyam is the story of a lower caste man who raised his voice against the evils of cast system during a period when religion and caste based system was very prominent in Kerala. It is also believed that Lord shiva came as pottn theyyam in front of Shankaracharya on his way to Sarvatchapeeda.

There are two types of Pottan theyyam, one which enters fire and one not. ‘Pulaya’, ‘Malaya’, ‘Chiravan’, ‘Panan’, and other communities have the right to act as Pottan theyyam. Unlike other theyyams pottan theyam do not have any facial drawings instead it wears a mask on face.
