Pothundi Dam

Pothundi Dam, picturesque locale is considered to be the entrance gate to Nelliyampathy. Nelliyampathy is just 17 kilometres (11 mi) away from here. It is an irrigation dam built in the 19th century and is considered as one of the oldest dam in India. The dam is constructed over Meenchadyppuzha and Padippuzha rivers which are tributaries of the Aylampuzha River.

An unusual feature of the earth dam is the core wall, which is built with a mixture of jaggery and quick lime. The dam also provides water supply, and the reservoir has been developed as an important inland fisheries project. This is a place with serene ambiance and tranquillity, which gives you a very rejuvenating experience. You can try for boating here to feel the real beauty of the reservoir. A popular festival held on the shores of the reservoir is known as the Nenmara Vallengi Vela Festival.

Padagiri or Nellikotta

Situated at an elevation of 1500 m above sea level, Padagiri is a famous hill just 6 Kms from Nelliyampathy and is one of the best places to visit while at Nelliyampathy. Filled with mesmerizing beauty Padagiri is the tallest peak of the Nelliyampathy Hills. Also known as Nellikotta, this popular picnic destination attracts tourist from every corner of the world. The area has lovely teak plantations.

Palagapandi Estate

Palagapandi Estate, one of the main landmark of Nelliyampathy hill station is a beautiful estate covered with plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom. Here you can find an old bungalow constructed during the British rule in India. This estate has been converted into a private owned resort. Visitors from every nook and corner comes here to enjoy the beauty of this fantastic destination. From here, you can also move on to Mampara, another destination at Nelliyampathy.

Seetharkundu

Seetharkund a breath-taking spot, is just 8 km away from Nelliyampathy. 100 m high waterfall at seetharkund is a must see experience. This place lays very close to Palagapandi estate. It is believed that Rama, Seetha and Lakshmana had visited this place during their period of exile and Seetha Devi had a bath from the nearby stream. That is how the place got the name ‘Seetharkundu’.

All places of Southern Palakkad can be seen from here including all dams in Palakkad district. The sunset is very beautiful from here. This is also a suicide point. The wind is very strong here and so be careful while you are here, because there are no guides here and safety should be given first preference.

Kaikatty

If you are an adventure loving person and interested in trekking, Nelliyampathy will not disappoint you. Kaikatty is the place where trekking is conducted in Nelliyampathy. The forest department is running a guest house here which is usually used as a base for trekkers. You can also see the government run orange and vegetable farm at Kaikatty. December is the best season for oranges here. Nelliyampathy is 26 Km away from Kaikatty.

Kesavanpara

Kesavanpara got its name because a man named Kesavan discovered this place, Kesavanpara. Kesavanpara is large rock covered with thick forests. A lot of wild animals are there in the surrounding forests of Kesavanpara. And so you can view the thick green forests around you. The Pothundi Dam is clearly visible from Kesavanpara. All people visiting Nelliyampathy also visits Kesavanpara.

Mampara

Mampara peak also known as Raja’s Cliff is about 20 km from Nelliyampathy. Mampara peak is situated at a height of 5250 feet above sea level. A trek to the Mampara peak is a real treat to the eyes, as the entire Palakkad range is visible. Once you reach the top you will be able to view the enchanting valley below, with the thick greenery of the forests and the lighter greenery of the paddy fields down the valley. The dams at Malampuzha, Chulliyar, Meenkara, Mulathara and Walayar can be viewed from here, at a distance. Parts of Parambikulam and Tamil Nadu towns like Pollachi, Coimbatore and Mettupalayam too are visible from Mampara.

You need special permission from forest department to visit Mampara. The entrance to Mampara was restricted after the declaration of Parambikulam tiger reserve.

Nelliyampathy Caves

Nelliyampathy caves is a group of caves found in the foothills of the picturesque Nelliyampathy Hills, about 52 km from Palakkad. These caves were once used as stables, covert room and for hunting animals. It is the place where the Manalar River divides into Bharathapuzha and Chalakudi River. To witness this rare sight, hundreds of people visit this place throughout the year.
