Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach is the only drive in beach in Kerala which stretches for a length of 5.5 km. The Beach is located at a distance of 8 Km from Thalassery and 16 Km from Kannur and runs parallel to National Highway 66 (formerly National Highway 17) and is the longest Drive-In Beach in India. The long beach curves in a wide area providing a good view of Kannur on the north.

Muzhappilangad Beach is bordered by black rocks, which also protect it from the stronger currents of the Arabian Sea, making its shallow waters a swimmer’s paradise. The charming feel of this picturesque Muzhappilangad beach invites you to swim, take a sun bath, or simply be idle around.

In order for a beach to be a drive in beach it should be long and the sand at the beach should be strong enough to drive on the beach so that the tires of the vehicle will not be struck in the sand. Fortunately the Muzhappilangad beach is wide and the sand is firm enough to support smooth driving. People can drive for a full 4 Km directly on the sand of the beach. And the good news is, it is rightly legal to drive along the beach. Even though Goa has many beautiful beaches, it does not have a Drive-in beach. That adds the importance of Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach.

The annual beach festival celebrated in the month of April is one of the important tourist attraction at Muzhappilangad beach. This festival attracts many people and adventurous people try many driving stunts in cars like drifting and wheeling in bikes as this is a paradise for driving along the shore.

Approximately 100–200 m south of the beach there is a private island called Dharmadam Island (Pacha Thuruthu in Malayalam, which translates to Green Island in English).  The amazing combination of beach and island is just across the Anjarakkandy River. During low tides you can reach the island by walk. If you walk to the island, make sure to get back before the return of high tides. The Island is covered with coconut palms and dense bushes. Such a conjunction of beach and island is rare.

Since it is a long beach, there are multiple paths and entrances to the beach. The main among them is an unpaved road winding through coconut groves leading to the beach. The meandering road will give you a chance to enjoy the typical village structure of Kerala roads. To get to this road, if you are driving from Tellicherry towards Kannur, take the left turn just before the first railway crossing you encounter after crossing the Moidu Bridge.

Since the late 90’s, the beach has seen a steady influx of European tourists during winter. A major share of foreign and domestic tourists are not aware of the potential of this elusive destination. It is a must see destination for Indians as well as foreign tourists. After the face lift of the beach there has been a huge improvement in the facilities available to the beach visitors including resorts, roads, etc.

Adventure sports like paragliding, parasailing and microlite flights are possible at the Muzhappilangad Beach in Thalassery. Other attractions include water sports, power boating or a simple catamaran ride.

Muzhappilangad is also a famous shooting destination. It was the main location for many Malayalam and non- Malayalam movies.
