Eco-Tourism at Thenmala

The main eco-tourism activity offered in Thenmala are the Trekking. There are different packages for trekking ranging from 2 hours to two days. The soft trekking includes a bus drive, trekking and boat drive. The forest offers a spectacular view when in full bloom. Wild animals like elephant, gaurs, sambar and barking deer, wild boar, bear etc are available in large numbers. The forest is dense and lofty. You can experience the splendour of a dense forest with closed canopy and diversified tree growth. You can see foot prints of different animals all over the trekking routes.

The Myristica swamp forest is a unique forest type found exclusively in the plains and low elevations of the southernmost part of the Western Ghats. A cruise through the reservoir gives a panoramic view of the wildlife sanctuary from the boat. The Parappar dam has been built across the Shenduruney River where it joins with Kulathupuzha River and Kalthuruttiar at Thenmala. The lake covers a total area of 13.72 sq kms.

Soft Trekking

In the soft trekking 4 km are covered in 2 Hours. Main attraction is to see the Myristica Swamp Forest which can be seen only in this part of the country. The trekking path is a forest which is not part of the Shenduruney wildlife sanctuary. The walk along the reservoir is scenic and beautiful. If you are lucky enough you can see animals on the way.

Elephant Trail at Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary

It is a one day trip to the Shenduruney wildlife sanctuary at Thenmala and then to Palaruvi Waterfalls. It is offered in two forms. Full Day trip and Half Day trip. The trip starts with a half an hour bus safari in the sanctuary followed by trekking for 3.5 hours and then boat safari for 1 hr.

Village Tour

One way drive of 37 Km day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m trip covers Palaruvi waterfall, Aryankavu Shastha temple and Rosemala village. A short walk for 5 kms in and around the forested area of the village inside the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is interesting. Again if you are lucky enough you can see animals on the way.

Village tour with night camping

One way drive of 37 Km from 2 p.m. to 2p.m. next day covering Palaruvi waterfall, Aryankavu Shastha temple and Rosemala village. A short walk for 2 kms in and around the forested area of the village inside the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is interesting. Night camping is in camp shed in sleeping mats. The trekkers will go for a morning trek next day from 7 a.m. to 12. Noon for 10 kms.

Idimuzhangan Para Trekking

Idimuzhangan Para Trekking is a guided trekking program in the Shenduruney wildlife Sanctuary and night stay at the camp shed near the beautiful reservoir named Idimuzhangan camp. The total trek takes 24 hours. You can reach here either by hard trekking or by boat. You can experience the true mysteries of the forest in this trekking.

Rock Wood Trekking

The visitors obtain an opportunity to trek through the semi-overgreen patch of forests along the side of the streams. There is a great chance to encounter some of the wildlife of shendurney, such as lion tailed macaque, sloth bear, Elephants, Guar, Nilgiri langur etc. The semi high altitude and the ever green nature of the forest,along with a beautiful stream and water fall beside should definitely make the campers their money worth.

Rosemala

A guided trekking program the Shenduruney wildlife Sanctuary and night stay at the camp shed. Here the wildlife enthusiast get a rare chance to encounter some of the interesting wildlife sanctuary. The campers should prepare to be mesmerized by picture perfect views of the sanctuary along with an enjoyment of natural spa in the stream of Pallivasal. This package includes trekking to a small waterfall through the forest area where Arogyapacha plants grows naturally in large patches and bird watching, which would be an excellent experience for the campers.
